Meet Dr. Bill Sowter

Raleigh North Carolina dentist Doctor Bill Sowter

Dr. Bill Sowter was raised in Chapel Hill, and has over 40 years of experience practicing dentistry. He is proud to be a second-generation dentist and likes to combine old-school customer service with the latest technology and methods. Before you get to meet Dr. Bill in person, you can learn a little more about his background below.

Why Did You Decide to Become a Dentist?

Growing up, Dr. Bill had an interest in veterinary medicine and dentistry, largely thanks to his father, Dr. Jack Sowter. His father was a dentist and professor of prosthodontics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) Adams School of Dentistry. After graduating from undergraduate from UNC and admittance to the UNC dental school, the decision between the two professions was made for Dr. Bill. He was happy to follow in his father’s footsteps while also working in a profession that would allow him to serve his community.

Where Did You Study Dentistry?

After Dr. Bill graduated from the UNC Adams School of Dentistry in 1980, he joined his father’s dental office in Raleigh where they worked together until 1995. Since then, Dr. Bill has continued to work and lead the dental office his father started. Always eager to learn and improve, he is a lifetime member of the American Dental Society, Raleigh/Wake County Dental Society, as well as several dental study clubs.

Outside of the Dental Office, What Do You Like to Do?

Dr. Bill moved to the Carpenter community in the Triangle area of North Carolina in 1972. Early on, he dabbled in tobacco farming and gardening while developing enduring relationships with his neighbors. He was a member of the now defunct Morrisville, NC Volunteer Fire Department for many years. He still lives in the area and is a member of the Carpenter Ruritan Club. These days, he enjoys outdoor activities, traveling, and taking care of his dogs.
